The 2011 Far West Masters race season kicked off with a 3-GS race
weekend at Mammoth Mountain. With Mammoth reporting their best November
snowfall in over 20 years, the mountain was in full operation and an
excellent week was enjoyed by participants in the Masters training camp
week prior to the race weekend. Every day new faces showed up and by
the weekend a field of 80+ racers were prepped and ready to go.

The weekend weather forecast of showers turned into moderate snowfall
and somewhat reduced visibility on Saturday, but the hard-working
Mammoth race crew worked constantly to maintain the track despite the
accumulating inches and we successfully pulled off 3 race runs to
complete the day's schedule of 1-1/2 races. Prospects for Sunday's
conditions weren't encouraging, but the weather backed off, Mammoth's
grooming crews packed and prepared the race hill to a good surface, and
we ended up with a good day of racing with mixed sun and light
overcast. The first morning run completed GS race #2 and with the
evening storm lingering to the west both runs of the third GS race were
held to complete a busy weekend.

With a great opening event setting the standard for the season, we look
forward to an off week on the schedule followed by a pre-holiday pair
of SL races at Squaw Valley on Dec. 18-19. All areas in the Sierras
have excellent early season conditions this year, so there's plenty of
opportunity to get some miles under your skis before our next event in
2 weeks!
