A team of twenty-five Far West racers headed to Park City Utah last week for the FIS Masters
Cup/Western Regional championship races. The event started with cold weather for the two training
days available to competitors on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by SG races on Friday and Saturday
on Payday. The weekend weather for the Sat/Sun SL races shifted to conditions more familiar to the
maritime west coasters of PNSA and FW, with the first strong winter storm to reach the Sierras
bringing warm wet snow into the normally dryer Wasatch.
Over 140 competitors gathered at Park City, from all the western region divisions (AK, PNSA, N, IM,
FW, RM) along with 7 central and eastern division competitors and 10 international competitors. A
new face on the masters racing scene but familiar to bike racing fans, Levi Leipheimer posted very
respectable finishes in the two SG races. While the strong Intermountain team dominated the overall
results for the women, Far West men coming home wearing the jacket of regional champion were Gate
De Mattei (M12), Don Smith (M10), Tim Stewart (M8), and Mike Shklovski (M3).
