The Mammoth SG makeup races scheduled for the weekend of Mar. 1-2 finally helped break the long
Sierra dry spell this season, with a nice 3-day series of storms rolling in mid-week and bringing
3-4 ft of very welcome snow before starting to clear out on Saturday. With the cooperation of
Mammoth's grooming crews to get cats out to pack the race hills, the weekend schedule was adjusted
to allow the U14 racers to hold their SG training run on Saturday, with two races for the U14
competitors on Sunday along with the Masters makeup races that were added on to take advantage of
the speed venue preparations.

Although Sunday's conditions were soft due to the new snow, with intermittent fog moving in as the
day progressed, the course set and constant maintenance by the Mammoth race crew kept the track in
as good condition as possible. Conditions were character building for the small but determined
group of masters, with flat light and bumpy conditions following the junior competitors, but
everyone finished safely. The course was redressed and slipped for the second run, but as the fog
thickened on the upper section of the course and visibility continued to deteriorate, the masters
officials met and made a jury decision to cancel the second race. The decision was confirmed when
increasing winds caused the Broadway lift to shut down at 2:15, while the U14 boys were still
racing.
